English translation

2381. Abū Sa'eed narrated that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: "Whoever wants to be seen, Allāh will show him, and whoever wants to be heard of, Allāh will make him heard of.” And he narrated that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: “He who shows no mercy to the people, Allāh shows him no mercy.” (Saḥīḥ) There are narrations on this topic from Jundab and ‘Abdullāh bin ‘Amr. [Abū ‘Eisā said:] This Hadīth is Gharīb [Hasan Saḥīḥ from this route].

Commentary

If a man does something good in order to show it off and to make himself famous, so that the people would praise him and honor him, on the Day of Resurrection Allāh will reveal his hypocrisy in the face of the people in order to show to everyone that whatever ‘good’ the man did, he did it not for the sake of Allāh but as a ploy to show off and make himself famous thereby.
