English translation

2745. Abū Hurairah narrated that when the Prophet ﷺ would sneeze, he would cover his face with his hand or with his garment, and muffle the sound with it. (Hasan) [Abū 'Eisā said:] This Hadīth is Hasan Sahih.

Arabic text

٢٧٤٥ - حَدَّثَنَا ‌مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ وَزِيرٍ الْوَاسِطِيُّ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا ‌يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ ‌مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَجْلَانَ، عَنْ ‌سُمَيٍّ ، عَنْ ‌أَبِي صَالِحٍ، عَنْ ‌أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، «كَانَ إِذَا عَطَسَ غَطَّى وَجْهَهُ بِيَدِهِ أَوْ بِثَوْبِهِ» وَغَضَّ بِهَا صَوْتَهُ. هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ.

Commentary

The good habit and example of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ teaches that a person should keep the sound minimal and suppressed whilst sneezing, particularly when he is in a gathering he should cover his face with a hand or a cloth.
