367. Suhaib narrated: “I passed by Allāh’s Messenger ﷺ while he was performing Ṣalāt, so I said greeted him with Salām, and he returned it by making signals.” He[1] said: “I do not know except that he[2] said: ‘He indicated with his finger.’” (Ṣaḥīḥ) [He said:] There are narrations on this topic from Bilāl, Abū Hurairah, Anas. and 'Āishah.
٣٦٧ - حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ ، عَنْ بُكَيْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الْأَشَجِّ ، عَنْ نَابِلٍ صَاحِبِ الْعَبَاءِ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، عَنْ صُهَيْبٍ، قَالَ: «مَرَرْتُ بِرَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ يُصَلِّي، فَسَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ، فَرَدَّ إِلَيَّ إِشَارَةً،» وَقَالَ: لَا أَعْلَمُ إِلَّا أَنَّهُ قَالَ: إِشَارَةً بِإِصْبَعِهِ. وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنْ بِلَالٍ وَأَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ وَأَنَسٍ وَعَائِشَةَ.

Imām Ibn Qudāmah wrote: It is better to read only the Tashah-hud after two Rak'ah; but Imām Sha'bī and Imām Shāfī said there is no problem in invoking blessing upon the Prophet ﷺ (Al-Mughnī: 2/223), and some narrations confirm this. The Four A'immah agreed that answering salutation with words in the prayer is not allowed; however, answering with gesture is allowed, as is clear from this Hadīth.
