English translation

697. Abū Hurairah narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said: "The fast is the day the people fast, the breaking of the fast is the day the people break their fast, and the sacrifice is the day the people sacrifice." (Hasan) Abū 'Eisā said: This Hadīth is Gharīb Hasan, and some of the people of knowledge explained this Hadīth by saying that this only means that the fast and the breaking of the fast is done with the Jamā'ah and the masses of the people.

Commentary

The objective of this Hadīth is that unity in acts of worship should be maintained. If all the people fall victim to a juristic mistake, for example: they cannot see the new crescent and they regard the month as thirty days, while it was, in fact, of twenty-nine days, in this case they will not be sinful and they should not be criticised or accused of a mistake.
