English translation

380. Mu'āiqib narrated: "I asked Allāh's Messenger ﷺ about smoothening the pebbles during Ṣalāt. He said: 'If you must do so, then let it be only once.'" (Ṣahīh) Abū 'Eisā said: This Hadīth is Ṣahīh.

Arabic text

٣٨٠ - حَدَّثَنَا ‌الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ حُرَيْثٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا ‌الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ ، عَنِ ‌الْأَوْزَاعِيِّ ، عَنْ ‌يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي ‌أَبُو سَلَمَةَ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ ‌مُعَيْقِيبٍ، قَالَ: «سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ مَسْحِ الْحَصَى فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَقَالَ: إِنْ كُنْتَ لَا بُدَّ فَاعِلًا فَمَرَّةً وَاحِدَةً». هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ.

Commentary

Anything at the place of prayer, which can cause disturbance and turn the attention away should be removed before the prayer; and if there is anything that attracts the gaze during prayer, it may be removed only once instead of doing so repeatedly.
