English translation
[7024] 1 - (2772) Zaid bin Arqam said: "We set out on a journey with the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ, and the people encountered hardship. 'Abdullāh bin Ubayy said to his companions: 'Spend not on those who are with Allāh's Messenger, until they desert him.' And he ('Abdullāh bin Ubayy) said: 'If we return to Al-Madīnah, indeed the more honourable will expel therefrom the meaner.' "I went to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ and told him about that, and he sent for 'Abdullāh bin Ubayy and asked him about that. 'Abdullāh swore a vehement oath saying that he had not said that, and he said: 'Zaid is lying to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ.' I was very upset about what they said, until Allāh revealed confirming what I had said: 'When the hypocrites come to you...'[1] "Then the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ summoned them so that he could pray for forgiveness for them, but they turned their heads away. And His Words: '...They are as blocks of wood propped up...' [1] And they were rather good-looking men."
