English translation
[7027] 3 - (2774) It was narrated that Ibn 'Umar said: "When 'Abdullâh bin Ubayy (bin Salûl) died, his son 'Abdullâh bin 'Abdullâh came to the Messenger [1] Al-Munâfiqûn 63:4. of Allāh ﷺ and asked him to give him his shirt so that he could shroud his father in it, and he gave it to him. Then he asked him to offer the funeral prayer for him, and the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ stood up to pray for him. 'Umar stood up and took hold of the garment of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ and said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, will you offer the funeral prayer for him when Allāh has forbidden you to pray for him?' The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: 'Rather Allāh has given me the choice, as He said: "Whether you ask for forgiveness for them or do not ask for forgiveness for them, if you ask for forgiveness for them seventy times..."[1] – and I will do more than that.' He said: 'But he is a hypocrite.' Then Allāh, Glorified and Exalted is He, revealed: "And never pray (funeral prayer) for any of them (hypocrites) who dies, nor stand at his grave..."[2]
